A Note on the Cuts

The shapes we work in

Old Mine

Hand-cut from the 1700s and 1800s, before modern machines. High crown, small table, soft chunky facets. The light dances rather than fires — what people call "candlelit."

Old European

The Old Mine's later, rounder cousin. Same character. More symmetry.

Rose

A flat-bottomed dome of triangular facets. Quiet, never blinding. In use since the 1500s.

Step

Rectangular facets parallel to the stone's edge. Geometric, restrained. Emeralds are step cuts. So are our ovals and Portuguese.

Portuguese

Modern in age, antique in spirit. More facets than almost any other cut. Prismatic in low light.

Marquise & Dutch Marquise

The elongated, pointed cut — commissioned by Louis XV, story has it, for his mistress. The Dutch variant has broader, softer facets. Less sparkle, more presence.
